We are in Hilversum in the Netherlands. It’s a garden that is surrounded by a natural landscape of woodlands and dunes, and what is special about this garden is that it’s exactly the surrounding of forests and trees that envelops the whole garden, and there are different conditions in the garden, there is from full sun, to dappled shade, into deeper shade, as the conditions of the garden change, as the sun moves around. From a green garden, as it was before. Evergreen topiaries of box, evergreen Taxus clipped as hedges, and then the lawn, basically we transformed it into a garden, which is very colourful. It is also green, of course, but it also changes, as the season changes. What is also most important for us is that it supports the local biodiversity, providing habitats and lots of different flowers at different times of the year. The garden is divided in three different areas. You have the front garden, which faces the road, and it’s a space that is more for being viewed from the inside of the house. Then you have the side of the property, where the client is more to enjoy a lunch or dinner, or having time with friends. And then there is the back of the garden, where it’s more about using the natural swimming pool or using the sauna, as well as having breakfast in the morning. When people step into this garden, the idea is that they should be really surprised about a huge variety of plants, and what is interesting is that while you explore the front, you don’t see everything in one go. That’s the sort of characteristic of our gardens, that you need to move through the space to then actually see what lies behind the curve and what are the plants within that space.
